INTERNSHIP AVAILABILITY — 2007

Organization Name St. Paul Travelers
Location Hartford , Connecticut
Number of Positions 11 Internships
Type of Student (e.g. graduate, Ph.D.) Computer Science or Economics

Brief Description of work

Economics and computer science majors have an ideal background for success on an insurance research team. We have found that people with this background readily assimilate the programming and business analysis skills necessary to succeed. Prior experience with modeling, or in using SAS is NOT required.

St. Paul Travelers is offering summer internships that will allow students to do research, data analysis, and modeling in the financial field of insurance. Interns will use SAS and other software tools to retrieve and summarize data in preparation for analysis. They will perform statistical analyses using statistical software and be expected to interpret the results and identify significant outcomes as well as producing reports to explain findings.

Effective communication skills and the ability to work as part of a modeling team are critical. The types of business problems considered may include analyzing the profitability of individual customers; finding marketing opportunities; identifying fraudulent claims; and predicting ultimate costs of insurance claims. St. Paul Travelers is one of the largest property/casualty insurance companies in the world.
