The installation files of EasyReg International come in the form of self-extracting WinZip files.
If your internet connection is very slow or unstable, I recommend the minimal setup procedure.
Run the following self-extracting Winzip files via Internet Explorer:
These Winzip files contain the installation files of the current version of EasyReg International, without the guided tours.
When you run ERI_D01.EXE,..., ERI_D17.EXE, the EasyReg setup files will be extracted in default folders c:\EasyReg.tmp\Disk1,...., c:\EasyReg.tmp\Disk17, respectively. In particular, if you run ERI_D01.EXE then the following window appears:
Click "Unzip". Then the files in ERI_D01.EXE are
extracted in folder
Run the following self-extracting Winzip file in Internet Explorer:
This file contains the installation files (the same as in ERI_D01.EXE, ...., ERI_D17.EXE) of the current version of EasyReg International, without the guided tours.
When you run ERI_INST.EXE the EasyReg setup files will be extracted at once in folders c:\EasyReg.tmp\Disk1,...., c:\EasyReg.tmp\Disk17
There is no essential difference between installing EasyReg on a network server or on a PC, except that the network version of EasyReg needs to be initialized by running it once with the EasyReg folder not write protected. See the EasyReg web page for further instructions on how to install EasyReg on a network server.
Running these EXE files works best with Internet Explorer, because this web browser allows you to run EXE files directly. Mozilla Firefox and Netscape require that you save these files first before you can execute them.
All these self-extracting WinZip files, and the files contained in them, have been tested and found to be working correctly. The last test was conducted on October 25, 2007, under Windows XP. If not, the problem may be due to your internet connection: During the downloading a few bytes have been lost. If so, just try again. In particular, if during the setup of EasyReg you get an error message saying that a particular file is missing or is defective, look up here in which "Disk" folder this file is located, and compare the number of bytes of the file involved with the number of bytes of this file in folder EasyReg.tmp. If there is a difference, download and run the corresponding installation file again.
If the problem persists, try the minimal setup procedure.
Make sure that your Windows folder and the files therein are not write-protected, as SETUP.EXE writes dynamic link libraries (DLL files) and other system files necessary for running EasyReg to the Windows folder. A known (but very rare) problem is if the Windows folder contains a write-protected file SETUP1.EXE. This file is a left-over from a previous setup of a Windows application for which the installation has been interrupted. If so, uncheck the Read-Only attribute of this file.
If after copying the system and EasyReg files the setup program seems to stall (which may happen under some versions of Windows XP), move the mouse pointer away from the Cancel button and hit the enter key.
If the setup program stalls for more than 15 minutes then Windows XP has a problem creating the EasyReg icon in the Start menu. This may happen on network computers for which you do not have administrative privileges. If so, terminate the setup program via Alt-Ctrl-Delete and create a shortcut to EasyReg manually, as follows:
EasyReg works under non-English versions of Windows as well, as long as the language involved uses a roman alphabet, for example German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and French Windows versions. However, EasyReg may not work with languages that use a non-roman alphabet such as Japanese and Chinese. If the EasyReg menus do not open automatically when you move the mouse pointer over them, the problem is likely due to the language setting for non-Unicode programs (EasyReg is such a program). To fix the problem, open Control Panel > Regional and Language Options, and on the "Advanced" tab, under "Language for non-Unicode programs", select English.
If the EasyReg menus open, but most of the submenus are disabled, consult the Help menu and the guided tours on how to import data for answers.
If you have already installed an older version of EasyReg International and your internet connection is slow or unstable, run the following self-extracting Winzip files:
These Winzip files contain all the EasyReg system files (but
not the guided tours) that have been changed or added since the introduction
of EasyReg International. These self-extracting zip files extract the upgraded files
in default folder
These upgrade files have been updated on February 25, 2008
If you have already installed an older version of EasyReg International and you have a high-speed internet connection, run the following self-extracting Winzip file:
Also this file contains all the EasyReg system files (the same
as in ERIUPGR1.EXE, ...., ERIUPGR9.EXE) that have
been changed or added since the introduction of EasyReg International.
This self-extracting Winzip file extracts the upgraded files
in default folder
This upgrade file has been updated on February 25, 2008
Note that EasyReg can also be upgraded to the current version via the EasyReg menu item "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version". This option also allows you to re-install EasyReg completely. The latter is as fast as upgrading via ERIUPGR1.EXE, ...., ERIUPGR9.EXE.
However, before you upgrade EasyReg via "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version", run
first. This self-extracting WinZip file extracts the latest versions of the file
EASYREG.EXE and the upgrade modules to the default EasyReg folder
If you have messed up the EasyReg database files, click here.
Miscellaneous modules are modules based on my work in progress, in particular my current work on semi-nonparametric estimation of duration models. See "Menu > Miscellaneous modules" in EasyReg. These modules are no longer included in the EasyReg setup; they have to be downloaded separately. However, EasyReg works fine without these modules. But if you insist, you can add them to EasyReg as follows. Open and run the self-extracting WinZip file:
Then the files involved are extracted in default folder
Instead of a user's manual, EasyReg comes with a variety of guided tours. These guided tours are HTM files which can be viewed via the default web browser. The following guided tours are available, as self-extracting Winzip files.
Note that EasyReg guided tours can also be downloaded or upgraded via the EasyReg menu item "WWW > Upgrade the EasyReg guided tours". However, before you use this option, run
first. See above.
Note that these guided tours are also available online. The online guided tours can also be accessed via EasyReg International. However, these guided tours come with many picture (JPG) files. Therefore, if your internet connection is slow it may take too long to load the online guided tours. If so, download the guided tours to make them available off-line.
When you run the upgrade and guided tours EXE Winzip files, the files therein
will be extracted in default EasyReg folder
If you upgrade EasyReg and download the guided tours via the WWW menu EasyReg will automatically download the files involved to the folder in which EasyReg is installed.
All the self-extracting Winzip EXE files and their contents have been scanned for (and found to be free of) viruses.
Note that the date on the EasyReg front window is the compilation date, i.e., the date of the installation files ERI_D01.EXE,..., ERI_D17.EXE and ERI_INST.EXE, but not necessarily the date of the latest upgrade.
You can check whether EasyReg is up-to-date via "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version". This option is recommended for upgrading the current version of EasyReg further, because the above upgrade files may not yet include the latest upgrades. However, this option may not work, because in July 2007 the URL of my website has changed. Click here for instructions how to fix this.
