EasyReg International front window

Installation of EasyReg International

There are two ways to install EasyReg International:

1. Standard setup

Download and run the following self-extracting Winzip file:

This program extracts all the setup files of the current version of EasyReg International in folder c:\EasyReg.tmp. You may change the drive and the folder name.

Next, run c:\EasyReg.tmp\SETUP.EXE. Then EasyReg International will be installed in default folder c:\Program Files\EasyReg International, without the guided tours. Again, you may change the drive and the name of the EasyReg folder.

If the setup program stalls for more than 15 minutes then Windows has a problem creating the EasyReg icon in the Start menu. This may happen on network computers for which you do not have administrative privileges. If so, terminate the setup program via Alt-Ctrl-Delete and create a shortcut to EasyReg manually, as follows:

Alternatively, create a shortcut to c:\Program Files\EasyReg International\EASYREG.EXE on your desk top.

Windows Vista and 7

EasyReg creates a subfolder Temp in the folder where EasyReg is installed. This subfolder is used to store the setting of EasyReg. Under Windows Vista and 7 it is therefore recommended to install EasyReg outside the c:\Program Files folder, because Windows Vista and 7 may not allow EasyReg to write files in subfolders of the c:\Program Files folder. If your hard drive is partioned in a C and D drive, the C drive may be entirely write protected, in particular under Windows 7. In that case install EasyReg on the D drive. In any case, under Windows Vista and 7 you should run EasyReg.tmp\SETUP.EXE as administrator. Moreover, make sure that the folder c:\Temp is not write-protected, as otherwise the upgrade procedures via the WWW menu will not work. See below.

2. Stand-alone setup

Because the standard setup was designed under Windows 98, it may not work under some versions of Windows, in particular Windows Vista and 7. Also, the setup of EasyReg may fail on network PC's for which you do not have administrative privileges.

The solution is to bypass Windows by installing EasyReg as a stand-alone program suite, as follows:

  1. Download and run the self-extracting WinZip file

Then EasyReg will be installed in default folder c:\EasyReg International, including all the guided tours, and all the necessary system files. You may change the default root folder c:\ in the Unzip To Folder box to the root folder of any other drive (for example d:\) with at least 85 MB free space.

  2. Create a shortcut on your desktop to c:\EasyReg International\EASYREG.EXE
That's all!

If you copy the folder EasyReg International to a USB drive, or unzip the contents of EASYREGSETUP.EXE directly to a USB drive, you can run EasyReg via EasyReg International\EASYREG.EXE on the USB drive on any Windows PC without installing it, because all the necessary system files are now included in this folder EasyReg International.

Installation on a Windows network server

There is no essential difference between installing EasyReg on a network server or on a PC, except that the network version of EasyReg needs to be initialized by running it once with the EasyReg folder not write protected. See the EasyReg web page for further instructions on how to install EasyReg on a network server.

Running EasyReg

EasyReg works under non-English versions of Windows as well, as long as the language involved uses a roman alphabet, for example German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and French Windows versions. However, EasyReg may not work with languages that use a non-roman alphabet such as Japanese and Chinese. If the EasyReg menus do not open automatically when you move the mouse pointer over them, the problem is likely due to the language setting for non-Unicode programs (EasyReg is such a program). To fix the problem, open Control Panel > Regional and Language Options, and on the "Advanced" tab, under "Language for non-Unicode programs", select English. Click here for detailed instructions. This will fix the problem without affecting the language of Windows itself.

If the EasyReg menus open, but most of the submenus are disabled, consult the Help menu and the guided tours on how to import data for answers.

If you get "Run-time error '75': Path/File access error" when you run EasyReg for the first time, the problem is likely due to a write-protected EasyReg folder (c:\Program Files\EasyReg International). This may happen under Windows Vista and 7. It appears that some versions of Vista and 7 limit access to the c:\Program Files folder. If you are unable to undo the write-protection involved, reinstall EasyReg outside c:\Program Files, for example in c:\EasyReg International.

Upgrading an older version of EasyReg International

If you have already installed an older version of EasyReg, run the following self-extracting Winzip file:

This self-extracting Winzip file extracts all the EasyReg files in default folder c:\Program Files\EasyReg International. If you have installed EasyReg in another folder, for example d:\EasyReg International, replace c:\Program Files\EasyReg International in the Unzip To File box with d:\EasyReg International

Note that under 64 bit versions of Windows Vista and 7 there are two Program Files folders, c:\Program Files for 64 bit programs and c:\Program Files (x86) for 32 bit programs. Since EasyReg is a 32 bit program, it should be installed in the latter folder. Consequently, if you upgrade EasyReg under 64 bit Windows, change the path of EasyReg in the Unzip To File box to c:\Program Files (x86)\EasyReg International.

Alternative upgrade procedure

Note that EasyReg can also be upgraded to the current version via the EasyReg menu item "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version". This option also allows you to re-install EasyReg completely.

However, before you upgrade EasyReg via "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version", make sure that folder c:\Temp is not write-protected, and then run

This self-extracting WinZip file extracts the latest versions of the file EASYREG.EXE and the upgrade modules to the default EasyReg folder c:\Program Files\EasyReg International

Again, if you have installed EasyReg in another folder, for example d:\EasyReg International, replace c:\Program Files\EasyReg International in the Unzip To File box with d:\EasyReg International

However, this upgrade procedure may not work on 64 bit Windows because some of the self-extracting winzip files containing upgraded modules are still 16 bit versions

Miscellaneous modules

Miscellaneous modules are modules based on my work in progress, in particular my current work on semi-nonparametric estimation of duration models. See "Menu > Miscellaneous modules" in EasyReg. These modules are no longer included in the EasyReg setup; they have to be downloaded separately. However, EasyReg works fine without these modules. But if you insist, you can add them to EasyReg as follows. Open and run the self-extracting WinZip file:

Then the files involved are extracted in default folder c:\Program Files\EasyReg International

Guided tours

Instead of a user's manual, EasyReg comes with a variety of guided tours. These guided tours are HTM files which can be viewed via the default web browser. The following guided tours are available, as self-extracting Winzip files.

Guided tours on data import:

Guided tours on data analysis:

Guided tours on single equation models:

Guided tours on multiple equation models:

Guided tours on user-defined nonlinear models:

Alternative download procedures for the guided tours

Note that EasyReg guided tours can also be downloaded or upgraded via the EasyReg menu item "WWW > Upgrade the EasyReg guided tours". However, before you use this option, run

first. See above.

If you have high-speed internet you can also download all the guided tours at once, by running

Online guided tours

Note that these guided tours are also available online. The online guided tours can also be accessed via EasyReg International. However, these guided tours come with many picture (JPG) files. Therefore, if your internet connection is slow it may take too long to load the online guided tours. If so, download the guided tours to make them available off-line.

The EasyReg folder

When you run the upgrade and guided tours EXE Winzip files, the files therein will be extracted in default EasyReg folder c:\Program Files\EasyReg International. However, in some non-English versions of Windows the folder "Program Files" may have a different name. If so, change "Program Files" in the WinZip Unzip To Folder box accordingly when you run the upgrade or guided tour EXE files.

If you upgrade EasyReg and download the guided tours via the WWW menu EasyReg will automatically download the files involved to folder c:\Temp and then copy the newer files to the the folder in which EasyReg is installed. However, this works only if folder c:\Temp is not write-protected.

Remark

All the self-extracting Winzip EXE files and their contents have been scanned for (and found to be free of) viruses.

Bug repairs and additions not yet included in the current version

Bug After you have downloaded or upgraded EasyReg International it is recommended that you check out regularly which bugs have been repaired and which new features have been added. There may be further upgrades and bug repairs not yet included in the current version. These further upgrades and bug repairs, if any, are posted here.

Note that the date on the EasyReg front window is the compilation date, i.e., the date of the installation files ERI_D01.EXE,..., ERI_D18.EXE and ERI_INST.EXE, but not necessarily the date of the latest upgrade.

You can check whether EasyReg is up-to-date via "WWW > Upgrade EasyReg to the latest version".
