The Batavia shipyard in Lelystad, the Netherlands, is foremost a center for traditional shipbuilding. Since 1985 over 200 young people have built an authentic reconstruction of the VOC-merchantman Batavia from 1628.

Many Dutch sailing aficionados of my generation have been inspired by the strip "The Adventures of Captain Rob" (in Dutch), which appeared in the daily newspaper "Het Parool" from December 1945 to January 1966.

The Netherlands (Nederland) is also known as Holland, but Holland is actually the two western provinces of the Netherlands.

The Waddenzee is located in the north of Holland, south of the Wadden Islands (the string of islands forming the northern coastline), and north of the "Afsluitdijk". The latter was the first project of the Zuiderzee works. It separates the salt water Waddenzee from the fresh water IJsselmeer . I used to sail there too.
