The Ph.D. thesis defense and graduation in the Netherlands are formal affairs. The candidate has to appear in dress-clothes, and the committee in academic regalia. The individual graduation ceremony takes place straight after the thesis defense. Traditionally the Ph.D. candidate is accompanied by two "assistants" who are merely serving as decoration. My assistants were my wife Cherie and my colleague Rene Stofberg, to my right and left, respectively.
My Ph.D. thesis was on Robust Methods and Asymptotic Theory in Nonlinear Econometrics, which I wrote
in my spare time next to my job as a senior research fellow at the Foundation for Economic Research
(SEO).
Chris Sims served as the guest committee chair.
